Covenant Health Taps Healthcare Attorney Doug Campbell as General Counsel

Posted on March 24, 2017

Jim VanderSteeg, Covenant Health President and CEO, has announced that for the first time in the health system’s history, it is adding the position of General Counsel to the organization’s executive leadership team. Effective April 1, longtime healthcare attorney Doug Campbell will join Covenant Health as its newest executive leader. Campbell has been with the Knoxville-based law firm of Wagner, Myers & Sanger, P.C., since 1987 and has served as counsel for Covenant Health with others in the firm since that time.
“I am very pleased to welcome Doug as an integral part of our executive leadership team,” VanderSteeg said. “Having worked closely with him on a number of complex initiatives and transactions over nearly a decade, I have seen firsthand his integrity, work ethic and commitment to health law and to our organization. He is highly competent and extremely knowledgeable with an impressive understanding of all aspects of health law and the health industry.
“Doug is a strategic thinker with a mind for business and has the unique ability to offer sound operational recommendations regarding the implementation of strategies,” VanderSteeg said. “Additionally, because of his long work history with Covenant Health, he has a depth of organizational knowledge that is unparalleled.”
Transitioning from a successful private law career to general counsel with Covenant Health is a natural professional evolution for Campbell. “I am honored and humbled that Jim asked me to transition to the general counsel role,” he said. “Having his confidence means a great deal. I have tremendous respect for Jim and I believe in his vision for the organization. To have the opportunity to practice law as part of Covenant Health – an organization I have always believed in and am deeply committed to – is very gratifying.”
Campbell’s expertise spans the continuum of health law, including representation of health systems, individual hospitals and health care joint ventures; physician contracting and relationships; healthcare mergers and acquisitions; construction and licensure of health care facilities; corporate and organizational governance; board/governing body responsibilities; conflicts of interest and related issues; regulatory compliance efforts involving analysis of state and Federal fraud and abuse laws; laws affecting nonprofit and tax-exempt entities, and other areas.
Campbell received a bachelor’s degree in business administration (accounting) and a juris doctor degree with highest honors from the University of Tennessee and was named to the Order of the Coif, an honor society for outstanding U.S. law school graduates. He is a member of The Knoxville Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association and the American Health Lawyers Association.
