Methodist Medical Center Employee is “Back to Active” After Minimally Invasive Procedure

When Babette Stoelting, manager of surgery administration and business operations at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, faced severe back pain, she began a transformative journey from healthcare provider to patient. After three years of chronic discomfort, Stoelting’s story highlights the life-changing impact of advanced surgical techniques and Covenant Health’s commitment to innovative healthcare.

MRI Reveals Severe Spinal Stenosis

Stoelting’s back and leg issues significantly affected her quality of life. “I had pain in my right buttock running down my leg to my toes. It caused a great deal of pain when walking and numbness in my toes,” she recalled.

Despite trying various treatments, including chiropractic care and physical therapy, her pain persisted. An MRI revealed severe spinal stenosis. Stoelting received epidural steroid injections every three months, which only provided temporary relief.

“Eventually, I realized the steroid injections were not as effective,” Stoelting said. “All I was doing was making it through my day. My quality of life was terrible. I wanted to be able to walk and hike.”

Two-Level Spinal Fusion Addresses Back and Leg Pain

The turning point came when Stoelting consulted Lawrence Maccree, DO, neurosurgeon at Methodist Medical Center, who suggested that spinal surgery had become her best option. “I had to think about it,” she said. “I was nervous. It took me about three weeks to decide, but it was the best decision I ever made.”

In May 2024 Stoelting underwent a two-level spinal fusion, also known as a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). Remarkably, she was able to go home the same day.

“We chose a minimally invasive, traditional surgery for Babette,” Dr. Maccree explained. “This procedure targeted the central canal and exiting nerve roots, which was crucial for addressing her back and leg pain.”

From Colleague to Patient

Transitioning from healthcare professional to patient was an unusual experience for Stoelting. “It is somewhat odd to become the patient and have your coworkers taking care of you,” she acknowledged.

But knowing her colleagues was also an advantage, she said. “I was familiar with the surgical team and had great confidence in their and my surgeon’s abilities. To say I wasn’t nervous would be a lie. This was major surgery, and surgery is always a risk, but I am extremely pleased with the results.”

The Road to Recovery

After spinal surgery, Stoelting’s life transformed dramatically. “The pain I had prior to my surgery was gone immediately post-op,” she said. Just a few days after her surgery, she was walking a mile – an achievement that was unimaginable before.

“Babette did well during and after the operation,” Dr. Maccree said. “She is now performing her daily activities, and I have the opportunity to regularly check in with her to see how she’s doing.”

Stoelting, who lives in Clinton and enjoys gardening, home improvement, traveling and walking, can now fully engage in her hobbies without the constant hindrance of pain. Her recovery is progressing, and she’s enthusiastic about her future.

Exceptional Surgery Experience at Methodist Medical Center

Describing her spinal surgery and patient care experience Stoelting said, “The team was warm and welcoming and explained everything before it happened. It was over before I knew it, and time to get dressed and go home.” She said the care she received was thorough and compassionate, and she felt well-informed and comfortable throughout the process.

Dr. Maccree emphasized the dedication and responsiveness of the surgical department at Methodist Medical Center, which ensures every procedure runs smoothly. “As a department, the team is receptive, friendly and responsive to the needs of the OR, patients and staff, ultimately creating a positive experience for each patient.”

Advanced Surgical Capabilities and Patient-Centered Care

Stoelting’s journey from enduring severe pain to regaining her mobility is a testament to Covenant Health’s advanced surgical capabilities and patient-centered care.

“Recovery is not easy or fast; you must do the work,” Stoelting said. “I would highly recommend Methodist to anyone needing neurosurgery or any surgery. The team is skilled, caring and compassionate.”

Stoelting’s story highlights the profound impact that innovative healthcare technology and dedicated professionals can have on patients’ lives. Dr. Maccree encourages those experiencing similar symptoms to consider their options carefully.

“Procedures like this offer people a really good chance to experience relief from symptoms like Babette’s,” he noted. “For those who are wondering if their leg pain is associated with their back pain, our team would be happy to see them and determine if this procedure is right for them.”

Stoelting’s positive experience at Covenant Health and Methodist Medical Center highlights a commitment to excellence and inspires others facing similar health challenges.
