The public is invited to a reception honoring a visiting delegation of businessmen from Obninsk, Russia. The reception will be held in the main lobby of Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge on Monday, Jan. 17 from 7-8:30 p.m.

The reception, sponsored by the Oak Ridge Sister City Support Organization and MMC, is open to anyone interested in learning more about the visiting Russian team.

The six-member delegation arrives Jan. 14 and will spend 10 days here studying the chamber of commerce structure, city government and local organizations. Dr. Kenneth Luckmann, MMC gastroenterologist, will appear Jan. 21 from 7 - 8 p.m. on Tennessee Cablevision’s Channel 12 to discuss the visit and interview the Russians. Viewers will be able to call in and participate in this interview.

The Oak Ridge Sister City Support Organization (SCSO) and the City of Obninsk, Russia have received a U.S.-NIS Municipal and Community Problem Solving Grant through Sister Cities International and the Department of State. The visit will help businessmen from Obninsk, Russia observe Oak Ridge’s economic development progress in light of current downsizing of various federal programs.

While in Oak Ridge, the delegates will meet with local company business leaders to discuss reasons the organizations chose to operate here. The group also will meet with local representatives from organizations similar to ones with which the delegates are involved in Obninsk. These organizations include Technology 2020, Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee, East Tennessee Economic Council, Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, New Century Alliance, and Tennessee’s Resource Valley.
