The Family Birthing Center at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge will begin a new series of childbirth classes on Tuesday, Feb. 1.

The four-part series will cover nutrition and exercise, the birthing process, breathing and relaxation techniques, and infant care. Classes will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 8, 15, and 22 in Methodist’s lobby classroom, which is located to the right of the hospital’s main entrance.

Classes are free to mothers-to-be who plan to deliver their babies at Methodist and their partners. Other expectant parents may attend, space allowing, for a cost of $20 per couple. To register, please call 481-5739.

The instructor will be Lynn Sheldon, a licensed practical nurse with 11 years of experience in labor and delivery, postpartum care, and infant care. She recommends that mothers-to-be register for the childbirth classes by their 28th week of pregnancy.

A mother of two, Sheldon is pursuing a degree as a registered nurse at Roane State Community College. She is a member of the International Certified Childbirth Educators, an organization that offers professional certification programs, childbirth educator workshops, and other educational opportunities for its 7,000 members.
