Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital Foundation Adds Eight New Members

he Methodist Hospital Foundation has elected its 1999 - 2000 officers and named eight new board members. Martha Moore Hobson was elected president, while Ken Jarmolow will serve as secretary. New board members include:

Sarah Craven is a past president and current board member of both the Oak Ridge Women's Club and the Oak Ridge Century Lions Club. She has been honored with the Lion of the Year Award of Excellence and the President's Appreciation Award. Craven has been a volunteer at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge for 14 years, and is the current president of the Methodist Volunteer Board of Directors.

Wanda Craven, owner of Polaris Travel, is a past president of both the Oak Ridge Morning Rotary Club and the Oak Ridge Sister City to Obninsk, Russia and Naka Machi, Japan. She served on the board of directors for the Girl's Club and Visitor's Bureau. A former Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce Board Member, she served on the chamber's Retail Committee, and was elected the 1990 retailer of the year. Craven was co-chair of the Roane State Community College fund drive which focused on building its Oak Ridge Campus. Currently, she serves on the Roane State Community College Board of Directors. Craven was co-developer of leadership and served as co-chair for 11 years with Leadership Oak Ridge.

Louise Dunlap, director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Office of Science and Technology Partnerships, served as the executive director of the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce where she was responsible for both economic and community development. Dunlap is active with the Oak Ridge Regional Planning Commission, the Pellissippi State Community College Foundation Board of Directors, the University of Tennessee Chemistry Department Alumni Steering Committee, the Executive Women's Association, and the Oak Ridge Rotary Club.

Jo Ann Garrett, retired public relations professional, has served on the Oak Ridge Board of Education for eight years, including four years as chairman. She was an administrative assistant to former Congresswoman Marilyn Lloyd, managing her constituent office in the northern portion of the Third District. As a member of the state board of the Tennessee League of Women Voters, Garrett lobbied for league issues in the Tennessee General Assembly. A long time Oak Ridger, she is a member and past president of the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club, Altrusa International, the Oak Ridge League of Women Voters, and the Anderson County Democratic Party executive committee.

Nancy Gray is the protocol officer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 1998, and again in 1999, she was chosen to chair the Methodist Hospital Foundation's Holiday Lights for Health campaign. The proceeds from the annual event have benefited the Hospitality House of Methodist Hospital Foundation since 1996. The house is a homelike facility for outpatients and family members who need close access to Methodist Regional Cancer Center for ongoing medical treatment. Gray is a volunteer for the United Way of Anderson County, and serves on the Leadership Oak Ridge Board of Directors.

Martha Moore Hobson, the 1999 - 2000 Methodist Foundation President, is a certified financial planner practitioner and a registered investment advisor in private practice in Oak Ridge. She has been president of and chaired the board of the East Tennessee Society of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners. In 1998, Medical Economics Magazine selected her one of "The 120 Best Financial Advisors for Doctors." Hobson is a member of the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club, member and past president of Altrusa International Inc. of Oak Ridge, and the founding president of the Altrusa Foundation of Oak Ridge. She has co-chaired the annual fund drive for United Way of Anderson County.

Ken Jarmolow, elected as the 1999 - 2000 Methodist Foundation Secretary, is a U.S. Army Air Corps test pilot, instructor and fighter pilot. He is the former president of Martin Marietta Energy Systems, and was vice president of research, and director of Martin Marietta Laboratories.

Edward Kahn, M.D., graduated from the University of California Berkeley and the University of Miami School of Medicine. After completing his orthopedic residency at the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Kahn served there as a part-time assistant professor of orthopedics. In 1984, he moved to Oak Ridge and joined Tennessee Orthopedic Clinics, P.C. Currently, Kahn is on the board of directors for both the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge and the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.

Keith C. Powers is a regional president of Union Planters Bank in Knoxville, where he is responsible for the daily operations of Anderson and Northeast Knox County. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge and a member and trustee of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. He serves on the board of directors at New Century Alliance, Ridgeview Hospital, Workforce Education Business Board, and The Appalachian Chapter of the Red Cross. He is also an advisory board member for Fairview Technology Center.

James Frank Wilson is an attorney with Wilson and Brooks, P.C., in Wartburg, where he has practiced law for 23 years. He is also an organizer and chairman of the board for Citizens First Bank. Wilson attends First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge where he has served on the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, the Memorials Committee and has been as a member and chairman of the Finance Committee. He is the president and chairman of W Group Properties, Inc.

The Methodist Hospital Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit corporation formed in 1990 to encourage and manage charitable contributions for Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. These contributions have helped support and expand MMC's healthcare services for the community, as well as providing outreach programs and progressive medical treatment for low-income citizens.

The Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of directors consisting of area community leaders who serve without pay. Other members of the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board of Directors are: Larry Beeman, Patricia Coffey, Sunny Harvey, Vivian Joyce, Jim McCarten, Bill Manly, Peter Mazur, Nancy Pham, Dr. Francis (Randy) Reid, Sandra Richard and Ken Sommerfeld. Ralph Aurin and Marcella Darnell are advisory members. George Jasny, Herman Postma and Lewis Preston are members emeritus.
