s of July 1, OB/GYN Consultants of Knoxville provides backup services for The Maternity Center of East Tennessee. Physicians with OB/GYN Consultants are available for obstetrical care for women who require transfer from the Maternity Center during labor to either Fort Sanders Regional or Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Centers. Kenneth O'Kelley, MD, serves as the new medical director.
The Maternity Center utilizes the expertise of certified nurse midwifes to deliver babies in a home-like setting. While all patients are deemed low-risk patients and receive good prenatal care and proper nutrition during their pregnancies, occasionally a patient will require transfer to an acute care facility for delivery. This happens when labor stalls and delivery must be induced after other nonpharmacological measures have proven unsuccessful.
"We've been working for some time to do a better job of incorporating new ideas and new practices in the care of women," said Dr. O'Kelley. "That's what excites me about this opportunity. This is a great way to have a relationship with nurse-midwives who can help us do that."
The Maternity Center is located off Ailor Avenue. Most transfer cases will come to Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.
