Self esteem is somewhat like a checkbook. You make deposits and withdrawals, become overdrawn if you aren't careful, and occasionally have resources to spare.
Laura Stockdale Hutzenbiler, Ph.D., will discuss self esteem and the checkbook concept at a Women's Center brown bag lunch program Friday, Feb. 6. Her program, "Loving Yourself," begins at 12 noon in the lobby of Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. It will be an informal discussion of how we develop self esteem, ways self esteem can change, and why people keep a negative self image.
Hutzenbiler is a licensed psychologist with a nursing background. In her private practice, she sees patients with general mental health concerns, as well as patients coping with physical illness and chronic pain. She is a well-known speaker locally and has also made presentations at national nursing and medical conventions. The American Journal of Nursing has produced a videotape, broadcast nationally on the Hospital Satellite Network, that features Hutzenbiler's counseling work with intensive care patients and their families.
