Joe Mitchell and Missy Kane share a passion for inspiring people to get out of the comfort zone and into a healthier lifestyle. Now a certified spin instructor, he's come a long way from morbid obesity just a couple of years ago.
At 46 years of age, Joe made a decision to change his life forever. Joe pursued and began a weight loss journey in front of a worldwide audience on NBC’s The Biggest
Loser. Leaner and stronger than ever, he’s now paying it forward as an assistant coach on this year’s team.
Joe or “Koala” as his castmates from NBC’s Biggest Loser Season 12 called him, found himself at 46, 369 pounds, pre-diabetic and with multiple medical problems brought on by his obesity. He lost a total of 155 lbs while on Biggest Loser, being trained by Dolvett Quince, Bob Harper and Wimbledon Champion Anna Kournikova. He also had the chance to train and learn under world renowned weight loss expert Dr. Robert Huizenga, as well as registered dietitian and best-selling author, Cheryl Forberg.
Joe says his biggest motivation for losing weight and staying healthy is his family, including his college sweetheart and wife of 25 years, Danene; his 12-year-old daughter, Autumn; and four-year-old son, Jojo, whom Joe and his wife adopted. He feared his obesity and poor health would prevent him from being the father he wanted to be and was afraid me might not be around for his son and daughter as they grew up. When Joe was at his heaviest, it strained his relationship with his father, who was embarrassed by Joe's weight. Before his dad died, Joe made a promise to lose the weight for his family. As a home health therapist in the Knoxville area, he also knows that being healthy gives him more credibility with his patients.
Joe’s mission now is to help as many people as he can regain their life, health & happiness and help them discover that “ If you only believe in yourself, you can truly achieve amazing things!”
