  • It's very motivating to see someone change their life through exercise and healthy habits.

I met M.C. Reddick when she signed up for a Get on Track walking series this past fall. M.C. had e-mailed me prior to the program about being more than 150 pounds overweight. I could tell she was ready to do what it took to lose some weight to help her health, even though it was hard for her to even come to the first class.

She had already started working out and could walk one mile in about 20 minutes, then in five weeks she took more than two minutes off that time and had lost additional weight. Since that time I have been talking to her to hear about her progress and have featured M.C. on my Fit and Fun show on public television. She is doing great and is excited to help others. Here is a part of M.C.'s fitness story and tips that she put together to share with others.

"As many of you have done, I tried to lose weight and even lost 100 pounds only to gain it back. I realized that I needed to reach out to others for support. In early October I was brainstorming about where I might be able to get the help I felt I needed. Not an hour later an ad came on for Covenant Health. Then on Missy Kane's Fit and Fun show she was talking about the "Get on Track" walking clinic which was starting the following Monday.

"I believe it was NO ACCIDENT that I happened upon Missy's clinic. The program and Missy turned out to be the boost I needed to get my walking program started; it has continued to be a huge support and information resource to me."

Whether you are just starting out or well on your way to a healthier way of life here are some of my tips

    • Move Your Body!!! Even if it is just walking five minutes more today, or do Missy's show at 7 a.m. in a chair.!

    • Water: Drink it and drink it often.

    • Keep a daily journal. I write down what I eat and how much I exercise to keep me honest

    • Individualize your program. You may like swimming instead of walking. Also ask for expert advice

    • Fuel your body. Don't starve, but eat healthy foods. I have cut out meat and eat more vegetables.

    • Surround yourself with people who will support you. They can't do it for you, but it can be encouraging

    • One day at a time. Set small goals. I can't lose 200 pounds today, but I can work on moving and burning up more calories and making good food choices that will make a difference down the road.

M.C. is doing great and can now walk five to six miles at a time! She joined a health club and is going to be on my Fit and Fun show throughout the year. We'll feature her the first Tuesday of each month.

You can catch her on Fit and Fun tomorrow Feb.1 at 7 a.m.

Missy Kane's Fit and Fun airs at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday on WSJK-WKOP TV channels 2 and 15. Low impact/senior days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Check the schedule for a list of upcoming shows!
