Cross Training is a Great Way to Stay Fit

ross training is a word we often associate with serious athletes, but it's also a good method of staying fit for everyone. Cross training means we combine different types exercises in our weekly workout routine. 50+ Fitness classes use different muscles by doing some cardio training, stretching at the end of class, and doing resistive training for muscle strength.

Many of our 50+ members also enjoy other activities during the week like walking and biking. Liz Tombras, a sales executive for WBIR TV, lost body fat and gained strength in our combined "A New Year, A New You" program. She now bikes more than 30 miles on weekend rides.

Liz still comes to the 50+ class at Trinity United Methodist Church which has helped her range of motion and flexibility. "I wouldn't have been able to bike such distances without getting injured if I hadn't gained so much flexibility from the 50+ classes," she says. "I feel great!"

Many people find combining walking with strength training and stretching keeps them fit, strong, and flexible.

A new "Get on Track with Missy Kane" walking class will begin at the Methodist Senior Connection at Oak Ridge Mall in June. We'll be offering a six-week class on Wednesday mornings.

Methodist Senior Connection offers many exercise classes including 50+ Fitness and P.A.C.E. (people with arthritis can exercise), so it's a great place for a walking series. It's one more way to use cross training to stay in shape, plus cross training keeps exercise fun instead of boring.
