It is estimated that approximately one in four people will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime. We are making strides in the survival rates of most types of cancer, and the key to this success has been early detection. When cancer is caught at an early stage, both the number of treatment options and the chance of long-term survival are improved.
On Sunday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m., runners and walkers of all ages will converge on Tyson Park in Knoxville, to participate in the fifth annual BUDDY'S Race Against Cancer. This 5K event is held to raise money for the cancer outreach programs provided by the Thompson Cancer Survival Center. These programs include mobile mammography, prostate cancer screenings, and educational programs throughout the region.
Last year, over $125,000 was raised to help support this effort. "One of the things that makes this event so important is the fact that 100 percent of the proceeds from the race will stay in our area to meet our community's needs," said Jim O'Brien, the 1998 Race Against Cancer chairman. "We also encourage participants to walk in honor of friends or family battling this disease or in memory of those who have passed away from cancer."
How can you help? Pick up an entry form at any BUDDY'S bar-b-q location, BI-LO stores or Proffitt's stores. Entry fees for the Race Against Cancer are $12.00 before race day and $15.00 the day of the race. The first 1,000 participants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt to wear on race day. A special pre-race registration pick-up will be held at the BI-LO store on Bearden Hill Thursday and Friday, Nov. 12 and 13.
Participants are also encouraged to collect pledges for their efforts. Prizes can be earned for collecting $75 or more in pledges and the grand prize winner will receive a $500 shopping spree from Proffitt's. All pledges are due by Nov. 30th.
Don't want to walk or run? Join us for our annual BUDDY'S Race Against Cancer Auction Gala, Friday evening, Nov. 13, at the Thompson Cancer Survival Center. Both silent and live auction items will be featured. George Archer, of Furrow Auction Company, will be the auctioneer for the event. Exciting auction items include a vacation in Breckenridge, artwork, a trip to Orlando, diamonds, and more!
The Race and Auction Gala are presented by Dick Broadcasting, Knoxville News- Sentinel, and WBIR-TV Channel 10. Our event sponsor is BUDDY'S bar-b-q. This year's major sponsors include BI-LO, The Chop House, Comcast, Chops Grill, and Coca Cola/Powerade.
