OHC 2000 Includes Two New Screenings
A breast cancer risk assessment and a stroke risk assessment will be added to the roster of screenings available at several sites during this year’s Operation Health Check.
The breast cancer risk assessment is a computerized evaluation which determines a woman’s risk of breast cancer based on factors such as age, age at birth of first child, family history, and so on. The assessment analyzes the woman’s health profile and assigns a number based on her history. A higher number indicates a greater risk for breast cancer.
The test is meant to encourage women to talk with their physicians or health care providers about their risk level and to determine if they need to pursue other diagnostic or preventive options.
The stroke risk assessment includes facts about stroke, stroke warning signs, and instructions to treat stroke as an emergency by calling 911 if a person is experiencing stroke symptoms.
It also identifies uncontrollable risk factors (age, family history, race, gender, medical conditions) and controllable risk factors (smoking, diet, blood pressure, alcohol consumption). The assessment provides opportunities for a person to measure controllable risk factors and set goals for improving them.
To find out which sites offer the assessments, check the Operation Health Check site schedule, call 541-4500.

Incredible Reading Rally Begins Today at Nanny's Nursery
For the fourth consecutive year, children at Nanny's Nursery will participate in the Incredible Reading Rally, a national program promoting literacy in America.
Beginning today and ending March 10, children at Nanny's will read books on-site and at home. Last year, Nanny's staff, parents, and volunteers read aloud to the children, setting an unbelievable reading record of almost 10,000 books.
According to Denise Lane, director, participation in the program allows Nanny's to showcase the literacy curriculum already in place and provides another opportunity for parental and community involvement.
"Reading is the key to educational and social success in life," says Lane. "It is the basic foundation of education. If children can learn to love reading, they will love learning. That's our goal at Nanny's - to provide the skills and instill the desire to become life-long learners."
Nanny's Nursery is a nationally accredited child care center enrolling children six weeks to 5 years of age. A member of Covenant Health, Nanny's is located on the Fort Sanders West campus in west Knoxville. If you would like to volunteer to read, call Nanny's at 690-7212.
