New Computer Aided Detection System Increases Accuracy of Mammography Readings
The Thompson Cancer Survival Center has added the latest technology to its Comprehensive Breast Center. The ImageChecker M1000 by R2 Technology can correctly identify, more than 80 percent of the time, breast cancer that otherwise might have been missed in a routine screening. This is the most advanced computer aided technology offered anywhere today.
The ImageChecker is a detection system with image analysis and display capabilities to help radiologists read routine screening mammograms. High volumes, complex images, and a low incidence of breast cancer in the regularly screened population are just a few of the challenges faced by radiologists today. The ImageChecker helps identify areas that may warrant closer examination, reducing the number of false negative readings.
With the help of the ImageChecker, films are read an extra time with higher clarity. Once films are developed and checked, they are assigned a bar code to identify the patient. The films are then fed into an ImageChecker processor that scans and analyzes images using a sophisticated pattern recognition program. The original films are placed on a customized viewer. Results are displayed onto video screens installed in the console. Here the radiologist checks to see if the computer has marked areas that may require further review.
This new technology gives radiologists an extra edge and an additional margin of quality assurance for reading mammograms. Although the radiologist’s opinion is the final interpretation, the ImageChecker enhances the accuracy of the reading. R2 Technology, the company that created the ImageChecker, estimates that for every 100,000 cancers detected 12,800 more could be found each year. This technology represents a significant contribution to screening mammograms by giving radiologists the potential to catch a cancer diagnosis one year earlier than usual.
"The computer aided detection system is a new device approved by the FDA which requires no radiation and no patient discomfort. In using this device, we will improve our sensitivity for diagnosing breast cancer in asymptomatic women," explains Dr. Gayle Roulier, director of women’s imaging for the Thompson Comprehensive Breast Center.
With earlier cancer detection, women benefit with increased survival rates and lower treatment costs. All patients receiving screening mammograms at Thompson Cancer Survival Center have their results checked by R2 Technology processing. "We are very pleased to offer all the latest technology to our patients. Their response has been phenomenal," Roulier said.
