  • aking New Year's resolutions is part of our culture -- and so is breaking them. But thousands of East Tennesseans will have useful strategies for actually keeping their resolutions thanks to Covenant Health's Power Resolutions Expo.

Expo attendees will get tips and techniques from the experts on everything from fitness to finances. Other offerings include a broad range of free educational programs and health screenings to help people get the new millennium off to a great start.

The Power Resolutions Expo is Friday, Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Knoxville Convention Center. Admission is free.

The Ultimate Power Lunch with fitness legend Jack LaLanne is 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the same day; luncheon tickets are $10. Call Covenant Health at 541-4500 to reserve lunch tickets or get more information.

Free educational programs at the Expo include:

    • "Taking Charge in the Year 2000: Getting a Happy, Healthy Start for the New Millennium" -- Dr. Bob Overholt, a board-certified allergist and popular television health commentator, will give valuable tips on reducing stress by managing your time and talents. 10 a.m.

    • "Therapeutic Movement: How to Release Tension and Stress Through Yoga" -- Shanti, owner of Therapeutic Movement, invites you to learn how to practice yoga for relaxation and good health. 10 a.m.

    • "Starting a Successful Fitness Program" -- Missy Kane, Health Promotions director for Covenant Health, teaches attendees how to take those difficult first steps. 1 p.m.

    • "Facing the New Millennium: The Newest Techniques in Facial Rejuvenation and Cosmetic Surgery" -- Dr. Ed Breazeale, board-certified plastic surgeon, shows how you can look as good as you feel thanks to the latest developments in body reshaping. 1 p.m.

Expo attendees can also take advantage of free health screenings that check balance and posture, blood pressure, body composition, bone density, flexibility, grip strength, lung function, memory and depression, and peripheral neurological functioning. And dozens of exhibitors will offer expert advice and products to help people stick to any kind of New Year's resolution, whether it's a fitness regimen or financial makeover.

If the flurry of educational programs and exhibits is too exhausting, attendees can relax with a rejuvenating -- and fully clothed -- chair massage.
