he American Heart Association (AHA) is recruiting family members, civic groups and businesses to help fight heart disease and stroke. You, too, can join this fight by organizing a Heart Walk team and setting a fundraising goal of $100 per team member.

Fort Sanders Parkwest and Fort Sanders Regional Medical Centers are presenting the 1999 American Heart Walk Sat., September 11 at 9 a.m. The three-mile walk begins and ends at the corner of Volunteer Boulevard and Pat Head Summitt Street on the University of Tennessee campus. Registration starts at 8 a.m.

Donations generated from Heart Walk teams go toward heart disease and stroke research, education and community service. During 1998 and 1999 the AHA invested $205,537 in research locally and $127 million nationally.

The AHA has identified several factors that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Some of these factors are uncontrollable, such as increasing age, family health history, race and gender. Still, other stroke factors result from a person's lifestyle such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Physical inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Excessive alcohol intake

These factors, however, can be changed, treated or modified by:

  • Getting your blood pressure levels checked
  • Being physically active
  • Not smoking
  • Eating a low-fat diet
  • Taking medications prescribed
  • Not drinking alcohol to excess

Join the AHA in its annual Heart Walk and help fight against heart disease and stroke by promoting awareness, education and research.
