Ahhh, Summertime....

Protect Yourself from the Sun
Protect Yourself from the Sun

ummertime - it means easy living, right? Actually, for most of us it means more activity and more time in the great outdoors.

Whether you like surf and sun or the shade of a tree-lined hiking trail, safety should be your first priority. You probably already know the basics:

Protect yourself from the sun. Avoid midday rays. Apply sunscreen and reapply frequently, especially after swimming. Cover yourself with long sleeves, hats, etc., if you're going to be outside for any length of time. Children need sunscreen, but it's too strong for infants – use hats, umbrellas, and clothing to protect them.

Watch that water. Learn to swim, and swim only in protected or observed areas – and always, always with a buddy! Never dive into water without checking the depth by jumping in feet first. Don't swim when you're tired or ill. If you're boating, skiing or using watercraft, follow posted rules for safety. Make sure everyone has a functioning life jacket or preserver.

Don't be bugged by bugs. Use insect repellent. Check your body and scalp for ticks or other insects after hiking. Tuck pant legs in your socks and wear long sleeves if you're in dense wooded areas. If a bug bite worsens or you experience symptoms like fever or rash, see a physician immediately and let him or her know what kind of insect you might have encountered.

Drink up! Heat saps your strength and dehydration can occur without you knowing it. Keep those fluids going – especially water and juices of a non-caffeinated variety. Sports drinks can also be helpful.

Gear up! Helmets, knee pads, wrist and shin guards, elbow pads, life jackets, etc., make you look like a pro AND protect you at the same time. Be especially careful if you are involved in an activity where head injury is a risk.

Use the ol' noodle. Think ahead. What kinds of risks are you taking? What supplies do you need? What plan or skills will you need to get yourself out of a situation if things go wrong? Where's the nearest first aid? (Don't rely on a cellular phone; you may need to take immediate action.)
