    Covenant Health Check

Covenant Health CheckCovenant Health Check, one of the area’s largest and most comprehensive annual health screening events, will celebrated its 29th year of health screenings in 2011. The popular community health fair began in 1982 and has screened more than 130,000 participants since the program began. In spring 2011, Health Check was held in the months of March and April at several locations in Knox, Loudon, Anderson, Sevier, and Roane counties.

Each Covenant Health Check site includes a variety of free screenings as well as several blood chemistry tests offered for nominal fees. Free screenings available at each site include functional fitness, blood pressure, bone density, carotid artery ultrasound, heart rhythm, and vision.

Blood tests also available at each site include a CHC blood chemistry profile (cholesterol, lipids, triglycerides, potassium, glucose, etc.) for $20, a complete blood count (red and white blood cells and platelet count) for $15, and thyroid, PSA (prostate specific antigen), Hemoglobin A1C, and C-reactive protein tests for $20 each. C-reactive protein is released into the bloodstream when inflammation is present, such as when blood vessels leading to the heart are damaged.

For the blood chemistry profile, a 12-hour fast is required for accurate results. Regular medications may be taken and water is allowed. Persons with diabetes should consult their physicians prior to fasting.
