    Families in the Kitchen

Hundreds of families took part in a free opportunity to learn how to make smart nutrition and exercise choices when Covenant Health and the Junior League of Knoxville partnered to offer the first “Families in the Kitchen” event at World’s Fair Park on Sept. 19.Cooking demonstration on stage at Families in the Kitchen

The joint program was developed to showcase the resources and opportunities available for improving family health. More than 20 community groups and organizations, including the Covenant Weight Management Center, BodyWorks, Covenant Kids Run and the Junior League, manned booths or offered programs that focused on healthy lifestyles and activities.

To engage children in the preparation of healthy meals and to educate them and their parents regarding nutrition and healthy choices, the event included a cook-off between six chefs and their child partners. The winning chef was Martin Smith from LeConte Medical Center. He took home a gift basket from the Cook’s Corner.  Additional programs are planned.

Continuing its support of efforts to promote healthy eating and exercise habits among children and families, the Junior League of Knoxville, again in partnership with Covenant Health, has awarded more than $25,000 in grants to area schools and community organizations working toward that goal during 2010-2011. Covenant Health is a Platinum Corporate Partner of JLK and provided the funds for these grants. Recipients of the Covenant Health/Junior League healthy eating grants.
