By placing the most advanced technology into the hands of talented and experienced physicians and staff, the Joint Replacement Center offers total care for the joint replacement patient.
Total Care
The Joint Replacement Center at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center is a highly specialized program dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for patients with degenerative joint disease caused by arthritis. The center is one of the firsts of its kind in our region.
The center’s physician, nurses and staff have special training and knowledge in joint replacement care. The medical director has completed an additional one-year fellowship in total joint replacement surgery.
The Joint Replacement Center offers the comprehensive range of services from education to rehabilitation necessary for maximizing the patient’s chance for a full recovery.
When is Surgery Necessary?
Major joints in the body are the hip, knee and shoulder. A joint is a special structure in the body where the ends of two of more bones meet. Cartilage covers the ends of the bones and "cushions" them for smooth, easy movement.
When a joint is diseased, such as with arthritis, the cartilage wears away. The bones become rough and grind together, causing pain and disability.
The main benefit of total joint replacement is pain relief. The decision to undergo surgery is a personal one. The patient and physician should discuss fully the procedure and all risks associated with it fully before reaching a decision

A Commitment To Comprehensive Care
Extensive Patient Education
Thorough patient training and education is one of several features which distinguishes the Joint Replacement Center as a premier facility of its kind.
The nurse coordinator meets individually with each patient and their family prior to surgery. Patients view a video and receive a notebook with information specific to their particular procedure. Special exercises and other health recommendations may be prescribed to better prepare the patient for the surgery.
Patients who are informed recover faster and their hospital stay is minimized. Armed with knowledge and training, they feel safer going home and returning to a more normal life.
Advanced Surgical Technologies and Equipment
The Joint Replacement Center provides state-of-the-art surgical services. The hospital surgery department provides a dedicated surgical suite equipped with the latest technologies and equipment.
An experienced and skilled surgical team minimizes complications which leads to a speedier recovery.
State-of-the-Art Revision Technology
The Joint Replacement Center specializes in joint revisions and is the first Knoxville area hospital to acquire a special ultrasonic driven tool, known as the ultradrive. Surgeons use it to remove cemented total joints prior to insertion of a replacement prosthesis. This state-of-the-art instrument is unique and superior to all other technologies available today. It greatly minimizes the amount of time it takes to perform the procedure thus decreasing blood loss and associated risks, such fractures or bone splintering.
Rehabilitation and Returning Home
Special care has been taken to create an environment best suited for recuperating from joint replacement surgery. Staff from the center even took the time to interview former patients to find out what types of furniture and floor plans were most comfortable.
As a result, the patient rooms and rehabilitation areas offer comfort, convenience and safety. Larger doors and other features are designed with the needs of the total joint patient uppermost in mind.
The rehabilitation unit is complete with an Activities Daily Living (ADL) room and therapists work individually with each patient.
A physiatrist from the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center serves as medical director of the unit and works closely with the staff to plan each patient’s rehabilitation program.
Understanding Your Needs
The Joint Replacement Center is a part of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center’s commitment to assessing and meeting community needs. In the last ten years, orthopedic procedures of hip and knee replacements and revisions have more than doubled across the country. The demand is expected to continue as our population continues to age and live longer.
Helping the elderly and others enjoy their longer, fuller lives pain-free is the primary goal of the Joint Replacement Center.
