Thursday, May 24, 2012 - Lower Your Risk of Skin Cancer

In East Tennessee the sun is in high abundance. Weather here, most times, is perfect for outdoor enjoyment, so practice sun safety every day this summer:

§   Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

§   Cover up with protective clothing to guard as much skin as possible and take some breaks in the shade.

§   Wear sunscreen year round and reapply.

§   Cover your head with a hat and remember to protect your ears and neck with sunscreen.

§   Wear sunglasses with 99-100 percent UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin.

§   Follow these practices to protect your skin even on cloudy or overcast days. UV rays travel through clouds.

§   Avoid other sources of UV light such as tanning beds and sun lamps.

§   Be familiar with your skin so you’ll notice any changes.

§   Make an appointment with your doctor if you notice any abnormalities in your skin.
