You only have one heart, so get it pumping in the right direction with the Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centers of Covenant Health.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehab is approved by the American College of Cardiology as a personalized exercise, diet, and education plan that lowers the risk of recurring heart trouble, and helps patients return to an active lifestyle. While on one of Covenant Health’s programs, rehabilitation nurses and technologists constantly monitor a patient’s heart rate and rhythm during exercise. It is a safe environment for patients recovering from recent heart trouble to test their limits and gain their strength back. As confidence is built, patients are able to get back to their normal lives, just as they were before heart “events” like heart attacks, angina, angioplasty, and post-coronary bypass surgery. This also includes patients considered to be high risks for coronary artery disease.

Most monitored programs are held in scheduled classes where you are with a group of patients exercising together, which helps with both mental and physical recovery. A team of professionals provides education about nutrition and managing cholesterol, monitoring blood pressure, managing stress and recognizing stroke symptoms. These professionals are in direct communication with the physician or cardiologist caring for you.

Dawn Glover, registered nurse and supervisor at Fort Loudoun Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program says it’s different from regular fitness programs. “We provide the necessary monitoring and skill set to encourage personal growth in our patients’ recovery, and to set them up on individualized programs to ensure they meet those goals and are confident in their abilities upon completion,” Glover says. “Patients look forward to completing the program and many continue on with our wellness programs to keep their hearts healthy.”

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehab is another program offered for patients suffering from asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis or other conditions that might cause shortness of breath and breathing complications. Patients are again in a group setting, exercising with others to increase strength and lung function.     Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs have been proven to reduce hospital admissions and improve exercise tolerance in people with lung diseases. Rehab can teach you how to “live with” your lung condition for better quality of life.

Smoking Cessation is also available through each of the centers affiliated with Covenant Health. Covenant Health’s Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centers are located in Anderson, Hamblen, Knox, Loudon, Roane and Sevier Counties. For a center nearest you call (865) 541-4500.
