Monday, March 04, 2013 - Time to Get Moving!

Whether it is before, after or in lieu of surgery, physical therapy plays an important role in getting spine patients to the point of pain free mobility.  But that timing depends on the patient and his or her diagnosis. According to Stephen Karp, manager of the Fort Sanders Therapy Center, the majority of people don’t require a surgical intervention. “Most of the time people have ‘tweaked’ something in their back muscles. That’s when we see folks - when their back pain begins,” says Karp. “We introduce them to exercises designed to increase their flexibility and mobility, and many times that relieves their back pain.”

For patients who have had surgery; however, the issues – and recovery – are different. Surgery is used to fix a structural issue, not a muscle problem.  So, getting patients back up and mobile is the main priority. Covenant Therapy Centers work with neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

“Everyone wants to move pain free, and that is our goal,” adds Karp.
