Balance/Vestibular Program

Definition: Balance difficulty can be the result of a combination of aging and medical issues or due to inner ear, i.e., vestibular problems. Functional problems may include difficulty walking safely at a normal pace, going up and down stairs, performing activities of daily living, or dizziness when working, performing household tasks or shopping.

Common Causes of Multifactorial Balance Problems:

  • Orthopedic conditions or injuries
  • Visual Problems
  • Physical inactivity
  • Muscle weakness or muscle tightness
  • Stroke or peripheral neuropathy

Common Causes of Vestibular Problems:

  • Benign positional vertigo
  • History of inner ear infection
  • Blow to the head
  • Tumor on vestibular nerve

Program Features/Requirements:

  • By physician order (Send prescription stating, "Physical Therapy for Balance/Vestibular Rehabilitation.")
  • Licensed therapists take a careful history
  • Comprehensive analysis of balance factors which may include computer assisted diagnostic and therapeutic equipment
  • Design a program of therapy and home exercise to strengthen weakened extremities and promote central nervous system compensation
  • May design shoe inserts to provide a more secure base of support, if needed
  • Make recommendations to improve safety of patient's home
