Covenant HomeCare Hospice is pleased to announce Variety's Katerpillar Kids Camp 2009. This year's camp will be held at Camp Wesley Woods in Townsend, Tennessee on September 19 and 20.
Variety's Katerpillar Kids Camp is a special weekend day camp for children grades 1-12 who are grieving the death of a loved one. The camp is a free community service provided by Covenant HomeCare Hospice and sponsored by Variety – The Children’s Charity.
The camp provides a safe and understanding environment where similar experiences of grief can be shared. Trained camp counselors provide information and guidance as they listen with open minds, hearts, and ears to each camper. Through individual expressions, the children realize they are not alone…that there are others who can share their pain…others who are close in age, thought, and feeling.
What is Katerpillar Kids Camp?
The camp is also about fun as campers enjoy a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, story telling, music, a ropes course, and hiking. Specially trained volunteers provide guidance throughout the weekend.
"Variety's Katerpillar Kids Camp is a special and unique experience for children," says Valerie Smith, camp director. "Children grieve, just as adults do, but oftentimes their feelings of grief are overlooked or discounted. We, as adults realize the importance of being able to express our feelings of grief. This camp allows the children that same opportunity.
