Anthony "Tony" SpeziaAfter joining Covenant Health in 1996, Anthony L. “Tony” Spezia was named President and CEO in 2000. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Healthcare Financial Management Association, and Health Ethics Trust. He serves on numerous hospital association boards and councils, and is past chairman of the Healthcare Systems Governing Council of the American Hospital Association.

Seventeen years ago, Fort Sanders Health System and MMC Healthcare System consolidated to form Covenant Health, with a mission of serving our communities by improving the quality of life through better health. Today, Covenant Health is nationally recognized a top health system in many areas: patient care, quality performance, cost, integration, information technology, finances, ethics and innovation.

We’ve climbed a long way from our early challenges related to becoming a system. Now, with the implications and risks of healthcare reform, we’re facing our greatest challenges.

We have invested more than a billion dollars in our communities since 2000 – a commitment no other healthcare organization has approached. We have opened new hospitals, expanded services, and brought cutting-edge medical technology to our region.

We are committed to meeting the challenges of the healthcare environment through effective strategic planning and wise use of resources.

Most of all, we are committed to providing excellent care to every patient, every time. This commitment to excellence will help us accomplish our mission of improving the quality of life through better health.


From the Chairman, Covenant Health Board of Directors

Larry MauldinNamed Chairman of the Covenant Health Board of Directors in 2010, Larry Mauldin is retired Chairman and President of SunTrust Bank, East Tennessee, and current Chairman of First Security Group, Inc. His career includes 30+ years of banking leadership in Georgia and Tennessee. He has chaired two United Way campaigns, and has served on the boards of community foundations, neighborhood improvement groups, Chambers of Commerce, and economic development organizations.

In order to deliver on our promise of excellence in today’s healthcare environment, preparation is critical. Covenant Health’s Board of Directors is committed to advancing our understanding of health care. We’re continually learning about hospitals’ operational challenges and how the current environment affects physicians and their practices. The healthcare universe is constantly shifting, so learning never stops. We’re a volunteer Board, but we have a passion for
  Covenant Health’s mission, and a desire to expand our knowledge in preparation for leading this outstanding organization.

Dedication to a shared goal is essential. Very few community endeavors are as important as making high-quality health care available to our citizens. Our patients and their families are at vulnerable points in their lives, and our Board believes it is a privilege to meet their healthcare needs. I’m blessed to be able to give something back to the community, and my fellow Board members are similarly committed to excellence and community service.

Experience is a valuable asset. Covenant Health has a legacy of delivering high-quality care, and this will help us weather the storms of change, including transitioning to value-based reimbursement. We’re determined to continue operating in a sound financial manner, so that we have the resources to serve and care for our communities.

It takes teamwork to accomplish a goal. I want to thank the many people who make it possible for Covenant Health to perform as promised in fulfilling its mission. In addition to an outstanding Board of Directors, our team includes employees, physicians, managers and leaders, volunteers, and members of the communities we serve. We are encouraged by the support and energy we receive from all of you, and grateful to work alongside those who share our vision for a healthier East Tennessee.
