2009 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon Draws Record Number of Runners, Joggers
A record number of runners participated in the fifth annual Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon on March 29, 2009. The race events included a marathon, half marathon, four-person marathon relay and 5K, as well as the Covenant Kids Run that took place the evening of March 28, 2009. More than 5,000 people participated in the events.
Stewart Ellington of Knoxville, Tenn., won the fifth annual Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon on Sunday, qualifying for the Boston Marathon on April 20, 2009. Ellington finished the 26.2-mile race with a time of 2:29:01. This is the second consecutive year that Ellington has won the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.
Justin Gillette of Niles, Mich., came in second for the second consecutive year at 2:36:20, and John Nay was third with a time of 2:47:21.
In the women's category, the top spot went to Kathy Wolski of Knoxville, Tenn. Her time was 3:03:20. Tammy Slusser of Monroeville, Pa., came in second at 3:05:47, and Andee Cranford of Morristown, Tenn., came in third at 3:09:29.
In the men's half-marathon, Jason Lokawatom of Tory, Ohio, finished the course at 1:06:59. Andy Baksa of Knoxville, Tenn., was second with a time of 1:07:59. Third place for the men was Andrew Press of Knoxville, Tenn. He finished at 1:10:10.
In the women's half-marathon, Kelsey Armstrong of Calbott, Tenn., took the top spot with a time of 1:20:57. Meggan Franks of Starksville, Miss., finished second at 1:23:33, and Natasha Yaremczuk of Paris, Ontario, Canada, finished third at 1:25:47.
In the men's 5K run, Ed Wright of Oak Ridge, Tenn., took first for the third consecutive year with a time of 17:08. Marc Sylvester of Knoxville, Tenn., finished second at 18:42, and Jason Macnair of Maryville, Tenn., finished third at 19:14.
Karen Underwood-Famiglietti of Knoxville, Tenn., won the women's 5K with a time of 18:17. Emily Boles of Greensboro, N.C., took second place at 20:13, and Joann Scott of Knoxville, Tenn., took third place at 21:21.
The field also included six hand cyclists competing in the marathon. Mike Wagner of Heber Springs, Ark., was the first hand cyclist to finish with a time of 2:04:52. Carly Waugh of Knoxville, Tenn., finished second at 2:19:33, and Fain Grogg of Johnson City, Tenn., finished third at 2:25:57. Other hand cyclists competing in the marathon included Dennis Clark of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Tom Kahler of Clinton, Tenn.; and Dean Schwartz of Johnson City, Tenn.
The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon also offered a four-person marathon relay and the one-mile Covenant Kids run.
